Okay, I wanted to love this book. I wanted to absolutely dive headfirst and not come up for air until I hit "the end." But... that didn't happen. I liked this book. I liked most of the characters, the major plot points were great, but it was so drawn out and long winded that I got so bored. I flipped so many pages without reading because things were moving so slowly. I'm not a huge fan of Vere's. She was annoying several times with her internal butt-kicking and battle of grief over her relationship to Mateo. So much second guessing and self doubt. However, the cover... to die for. It's amazing. Sadly, I won't be grabbing the next one in this series. I've loved everything else by KH but this one didn't do it for me, which makes me sad. :( I'm glad so many others have loved it though. KH truly is an amazing author. I will continue reading her other novels.Tags : Amazon.com: Love, in English eBook: Karina Halle: Kindle Store, ebook,Karina Halle,Love, in English,Metal Blonde Books,Fiction Contemporary Women,Fiction Romance New Adult
Love in English eBook Karina Halle Reviews
On the recommendation of many Karina fans and as a self-confessed sucker for a beautiful romance, I dove into this one. It isn't one of her new books, in fact, she wrote it quite a while ago, long before I had ever heard of her. Now that I can't get enough of her poingant stories, I can fill my days with her previous books while I await her new releases.
I totally fell hook, line, and sinker for Vera and Mateo. Their love was beautiful and the setting was absolutely perfect. Heading off to Spain to teach English for a month would be amazing and apparently, this is something that really exists.
Some may find the story to be to taboo for them but not me. Vera and Mateo had such a magnetic chemistry that even all their best efforts couldn't keep them apart. First kisses and first sexual encounters really make or break a couple for me and boy did Mateo do this right. I was in lust and full of passion right along with Vera.
Karina Halle did an excellent job of portraying all sides of this love story. When kids and ex-wives come into play, there are lots of feelings being thrown around. And lets not forget the grand gesture, the epitome of all great love stories. Mateo sure did this one right.
Even if you are totally against reading anything that remotely identifies as cheating, you should give this one a try. True love cannot be banished to the sidelines. I will totally be reading Love in Spanish to see everything from Mateo's POV.
When I began this journey, I thought I knew how it was going to be. Really yes and no. I got a sense that Vera Miles was set on adventure and wanted to get her feet wet but she was still rather cautious. The story really didn't start until she landed in Spain and immersed herself in the cultural, food, and people.
This might seem rather cliche but the way Vera Miles met Mateo Casalles was perfect. With that first encounter, the way Vera was living and acting would ultimately change. There was times throughout the story I wanted to shake the crap out of Vera mainly she was cutting tell and running instead of working it out. Thank God for Mateo. He was willing to fight tooth and nail for their love.
I loved when Mateo loved he loved you with his whole heart. He was a man that was willing to put his heart on sleeve and hoping that he is love will be reciprocated. The love which ,Vera and Mateo, wasn't anything pure. It was actually morally forbidden but they thew caution to wind and followed their love. I don't know what the next book entails but I know I can't wait to see the growth between Mateo and his Estrella.
I'd like to start off by saying how much I loved the book when I first started reading it. The imagery, writing, all of it. Then, I got really uncomfortable. I knew going in that it was a story about an affair and the not so pretty side of infidelity which I thought would make a pretty interesting plot, however, I just couldn't really find a way to like the characters or the story after awhile. Ok, I'm 47, heavily pierced and covered in tattoos. That being said, I get my fair share of strange looks but it's hardly the focus of every conversation. Yes, Vera had piercings and tattoos, moving on. It drives me nuts when stories have to keep bringing that up as if it makes the character less worthy of respect and a normal life. Next, Mateo seemed to keep one foot in his marriage and one foot in his relationship with Vera. Either man up and leave your wife and deal with all those consequences or stay with your wife and work it out. Seriously, you're a successful, older man who is proud. Stand up for yourself and live the life you want to!!! I had a real issue with him allowing Vera to be slapped and spit on and him offering her no defense. I'm sorry, I would have left and never looked back.
The large amount of 5 stars this book received are what made me purchase it, however, this book has forced me to take a break from this genre and seek out something else.
What a unique storyline. Twenty-three year old Vera reminded me of a lost soul. A broken childhood and unsupportive family have made her harden her heart. She takes a summer to go abroad and help strengthen English speaking to a wide variety of adults in Spain. From the get-go, I always kinda felt like Vera was on the outside looking in. She's wildly different than everyone else - young, covered in tattoos, lives in Canada. But all the Spaniards were eager to better than English speaking skills, and all the Anglos and Spaniards developed some very unique friendships. But Vera is strongly drawn to Mateo. What could be wrong with that? Other than the fact he's 38, a semi-celebrity, lives in another country, has a daughter... and he's married. Let the roller coaster of emotions begin. This book was heartwarming and thoughtful, yet humorous, especially when things got lost in translation. So many times I found myself cheering for Vera and Mateo, then I was backpedaling because cheating is cheating. Matea tugged at my heart strings because he was so passionate in his feelings for Vera, something I don't know that she always reciprocated. There was a fair amount of typos and editing errors that grated on my nerves. Overall I really enjoyed this book.
