1976 the long hot summer. Four friends pool their limited resources to buy a fell farm in Eskdale, a Lakeland valley. With four children under three they embark on an adventure into shared living, combining incomes, efforts and skills to try to make a success of their fragile enterprise. In their early years at Fisherground they pursue a dream… and make it fail, whilst succeeding on oh so many far more important other counts. Join them as they meet an array of Cumbrian characters in the valley and explore the world of auctions, shows and valley life. Find out what it means to ‘travel t’entire’! Journey with the author as he ‘travels t’entire’ spectrum of emotions; laughter to tears, love to estrangement, birth to death, with a warmth that reflects the complex relationships at Fisherground. This is much more than simply a book about a Lakeland farm. The author becomes a part-time priest, helping the hard-pressed vicar with services, weddings, baptisms and funerals. Join him on his first ill-fated funeral when he finds himself ‘dancing with a girl with a hole in her stocking’. Share his experience when he and his wife Jennifer host the BBC programme ‘This is the day’. Join him on the side of a mountain learning to paraglide, and share the exhilaration of a mile-high glide along his beloved Eskdale Valley. Inevitably, over a quarter of a century, there are dark times too. There is no flinching from the tensions involved when two couples and their children share a house, a farm and their future. One couple, Anne-Marie and Geoff, have to cope with cancer just as the Lake District is coping with the ravages of Foot and Mouth disease. As farmer, priest and campsite owner Ian meets the complex issues the disease raises head on. Share the dream!

I had the good fortune to spend a few weekends at Fisherground in the mid 80's. With a group of lads I slept on bales of hay in the barn in February. It was cold but great fun. We spent our days on the cells and our evenings in the pub. Thanks so much for Sharing this story I recommend it to anybody who knows or reads about the wonderful Lakes.Product details

Fisherground Living the Dream Ian Hall 9780992815615 Books Reviews
Meeting the Halls, and then reading the book was so engrossing.
Chance meeting, lovely couple, with great generosity.
Love to read about other people's lives and history.
Thanks for the opportunity!!
Roger Ebert, acclaimed American film critic, in his review of 'American Beauty' said .. "The moment a man stops dreaming is the moment he petrifies inside ..". Ian Hall, with phenomenal support from his family and friends, is never in danger of petrifying inside. Unlike his soaring paraglider, with which he has the utmost fun and enjoyment, his initial endeavors in farming are extremely earthbound and laborious. His dreams, as well as necessity, take him through various transformations as he weaves and shapes his destiny. Using prose which ranges from the very down-to-earth Cumbrian dialect to the romantic and poetic, he paints a picture which captivates the imagination and the emotions of the reader. How could one not fall in love with Eskdale, one of God's most heavenly places on earth? By the same token how could one not feel part of the scene as he relates his day-to-day adventures with such honest, self-effacing humor? How could one not feel unbearably sad as he relates the details of his 'annus horribilis'? We are the beneficiaries of his memories and, with a nod to Shakespeare, this one man, in his time, has played many parts! I look forward to the paperback version of this most satisfying story.
A wonderful account of life in Eskdale. Although I am older than the Fisherground kids I too enjoyed the magic of life in the most beautiful of valleys. This has brought back happy memories and it was a joy to read of those names from the past conjured in technicolour through Ian's great narrative.
Thank you
