Paige Simon was the only girl Declan ever loved. The only one capable of silencing his voices, the only person to ever have faith in who he was, until the day her faith turned to doubt and destroyed everything they’d made together. Declan O ’Connell was the only person Paige could be herself with. The only one she could rely on, until the day she was forced to make a choice that would condemn them both. They’ve had years apart, and second chances don’t belong to the damned. But when you come face to face with your savior, it’s almost impossible to walk away. In order to move beyond the sins of their past, and forever silence the demons in his head, they’ll have to risk it all. But with love, there are real reasons to be afraid and, sometimes… your salvation is your damnation.

This was my first book by A.M. Johnson, and let me tell you, I was blown away! Her writing has a lyrical quality that nearly broke my kindle highlighter. It was poetic, smart, and heartbreakingly beautiful, but it was also raw and real in the best way. Second chance romances are a favorite of mine, and I loved watching Declan and Paige confront their past, face their fears, and rediscover each other and the love they once shared. My favorite quote:
"I wanted to spend every minute in this tiny ramshackle room with this boy who thought like a man, who painted like a god, and who made me feel like I was special ... like I'd always be his."
Great story, stellar writing … just amazing! This is a total must read!!

Possession Avenues Ink Series Volume 1 A M Johnson 9781542388603 Books Reviews
As usual, AM Johnson sweeps her brush across a canvas and comes away with a priceless piece of art. I rarely read stories that have mental illness in them, not by choice necessarily, but they don't always come along in the romance genre. When they do it always touches my heart, relating to my own deficiencies and self doubt. Declan's and Paige's journey to fight their way back to each other after years of suffering apart is a memorable one. I do not personally suffer from mental illness but the parts that are written from Declan's POV were heartfelt and painted a good picture of the difficulties that he suffers from in life. I love how he sees the world differently, and that Paige loves him wholly, even his darkness. I could almost see his paintings as he lost himself in the creation of them. Paige has suffered in her own way, and as a daughter of a minister I could relate to some of the conflicts that she had with the judgmental side of religion. Gladly I have experienced the joy that Paige has as well, when she realizes that her God would never hate her or condemn her in the way that others had. Hate has no place in love. This was a perfectly written story of two kindred souls getting lost on the journey in life, the struggle to find each other again and to learn to trust in the foundation of love set long ago. I loved it. Every word...
Possession by AM Johnson is her first release in the Avenues Ink Series. It's centered around Declan and Paige who were once lovers and best friends but after time and circumstances, they were torn apart. We are taken through their story written in only a way Johnson can; beautifully poetic, heartbreaking and colorful. She doesn't tell their story, she colors it. She paints their pictures so you can't help but be completely immersed in their world. You will laugh with them, cry with them and experience everything they're going through in beautiful technicolor.
Possession isn't a religious book, or a pro-choice book. Possession is a book about two teenagers making adult decisions and dealing with those consequences for years to come.
What an incredibly moving and emotional story! I cannot even express how much I loved this book. It was so much more than a second chance love story. It was a story of hope and pain and real life. A.M.'s writing is pure magic. Declan and Paige are such beautifully and tragically broken characters. The story is told perfectly from both of their points of view and they literally jumped off the page. I felt like I was right there with them experiencing the soaring highs and pitch black lows, making the amazing and emotionally charged journey beside them. There were honestly times when I had to pause to let the poetry of the author's words really sink in, because I was stunned at how truthful and raw they were.
This is not a fluffy and light read. There are hard truths and subjects that other authors wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole, but the story isn't truly about those things. It's about understanding, bravery, forgiveness, and above all love. The love of friends. The love of family - blood or not. The love of those who see your shadows and embrace them. I am so excited to continue on with this series and am hoping we will get Liam's story next. Cannot recommend this book enough!
AM Johnson means serious business when she wrote this piece of art. It’s a brave thing to write a book, it’s entirely a different matter if the said book dealt with complex issues like mental health and religious beliefs. She maneuvered through the intricacies of the characters’ personalities and concerns with so much depth and careful precision blending in the romance she’d master to create all this time.
Declan is unlike any other hero I’ve read. He hears voices in his head because of his mental illness, even blacks out because of it but he is a very talented man. He paints, does tattoos, and is excellent in doing such. He’s the silent type and this draws Paige in to him. Only Paige silences the evil in his head when she’s around.
Paige, turns out, is a master of paintbrush herself as well. But this talent wasn’t permitted on her husband’s household. She didn’t come off as a strong character for me. Not at the beginning anyway. She came from a very religious family. Seeing her with Declan, her parents didn’t approve making her marry someone from the family with the same belief. Only, there’s no love. Her parents made sure she’d pay for the sins she did when she was with Dex. She let her marriage to Clark happened to atone for her sins because that’s what her parents believe she should do for God to forgive her. She was bordering on being a doormat heroine to me but she finally stood up for herself when she found out her husband was sleeping with another woman because she couldn’t bear him a child of their own.
The secondary characters like Declan’s brothers (protagonists), Paige’s husband and parents (antagonists) and their beliefs made a huge impact on both hero’s and heroine’s lives and created a lasting impression as well. It’s wonderful how they’re characterized that way–how you’d love and hate them.
The story was really difficult to get in to at first because it’s like a chaos in there with Paige’s issues with her husband and her family, and Declan with the voices inside his head, even the sin that Paige was paying for didn’t come right away. But after the revelations from the past had been revealed, the story moved smoothly lingering more in the present with Declan and Paige together but few conflicts still unresolved (i.e. Paige’s divorce and Declan’s choice to stop his medications) and once again Amanda’s words held me captive, bringing up all the emotions to the surface, giving meaning to the real in reality.
There were a few repetitive scenes and words that I would’ve liked to be edited/omitted and I wasn’t able to connect with the characters like I would’ve wanted to but the book was still good, punching you to the gut with the characters’ vulnerabilities, flaws and creativity. The shitty start of their lives was totally worth the heartwarming, very beautiful ending. Both characters have also come full circle–still flawed but better now that they’re together taking on life with so much love and hope.
Because of its sensitive themes, this may not be for everyone (no, no characters actually died). I commend the author for taking on the diversity of romance in this particular story. I can’t wait to read the other brothers’ books!
